Summary

A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK

On an island off the coast of Ireland, guests gather to celebrate two people joining their lives together as one。 The groom: handsome and charming, a rising television star。 The bride: smart and ambitious, a magazine publisher。 It’s a wedding for a magazine, or for a celebrity: the designer dress, the remote location, the luxe party favors, the boutique whiskey。 The cell phone service may be spotty and the waves may be rough, but every detail has been expertly planned and will be expertly executed。

But perfection is for plans, and people are all too human。 As the champagne is popped and the festivities begin, resentments and petty jealousies begin to mingle with the reminiscences and well wishes。 The groomsmen begin the drinking game from their school days。 The bridesmaid not-so-accidentally ruins her dress。 The bride’s oldest (male) friend gives an uncomfortably caring toast。

And then someone turns up dead。 Who didn’t wish the happy couple well? And perhaps more important, why?

I found this to be a struggle, hence the length of time it took me!

Joanne

so this is obviously a fictional story but let me just say that my aversion to men has strengthened。

i've never wanted to finish a book this badly before。。。。 and not in a good way。 not only was it just dragging and dragging on with unnecessary details but i felt a lot of it didn't even add structure to the overall book and the ending seemed rush。 overall - waste of my time i've never wanted to finish a book this badly before。。。。 and not in a good way。 not only was it just dragging and dragging on with unnecessary details but i felt a lot of it didn't even add structure to the overall book and the ending seemed rush。 overall - waste of my time 。。。more

It started very well。。 then halfway through I was worried how this is going to end with so many characters and secrets。 Then。。。。 the writer managed to tie everything flawlessly! Love it。

Wowza! Great plot twists!

I am sure I am in the minority but I did not like this book so much。 I did like the short paragraphs and the way the author kept reminding me who she was writing about/or as at the beginning of each。 It took me a very long time to read and I had no trouble putting it down for long periods。 Even the ending was not fast。 But the "lights did go out" and I finished。 I am sure I am in the minority but I did not like this book so much。 I did like the short paragraphs and the way the author kept reminding me who she was writing about/or as at the beginning of each。 It took me a very long time to read and I had no trouble putting it down for long periods。 Even the ending was not fast。 But the "lights did go out" and I finished。 。。。more

Wow! All I can say is I thought I had it figured out a few chapters in, but boy was I mistaken! This was a really great page turner。 I could not put it down。 A story I will remember!

Krishanth

Familiar! Too much of Christie and that familiarity bred contempt for this one。

This is what I get for picking up another book with the Reese's Bookclub sticker。。。。the other one was "Where the Crawdads Sing" and I hated myself for finishing that one too。There are no "Pros" so we'll just get straight to the "Cons。"- Present tense。- Everyone is hiding a secret !- First person alternating POV chapters - featuring about six different characters。 Do you really want the perspectives of that many different characters in a novel? Isn't this why God created the omniscient narrator? Isn't this why God created the omniscient narrator? This is just abject silliness。- Bad nicknames。 Johnathan is called "Johnno" and Hannah is called "Han。" UGH。 Why。- Lesbian teasing: two heterosexual women characters seem to be drawn to each other; in a cave, they unburden their hearts, and their knees touch。 They seem to like the knees touching。 This never goes anywhere, nor does it need to。 So why write it?- Right before the ladies go to the cave, one of the drunken wedding attendees has stumbled out of a room full of loud laughter and hijinks, with his trousers around his ankles and "dick flopping out obscenely", and leered at them。 Yes, Foley truly is the Agatha Christie of her generation。 Christie would have written of dicks flopping out at parties too if only she could have gotten it past the censors。- This trendy cover with the "handwritten" font。 I've had just about enough of this。- The beginning of the novel teases the end, a scene during the after-wedding party when the lights suddenly go out and a murder happens。 At the end of the novel the chapters get shorter, until finally there are five tiny chapters from five different POVs that all end with: "And then the lights go out。" - The nails on chalkboard error "I think at first he means Charlie and I" which is then repeated two more times。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Am I the only one who felt the last few twists of this strongly resembled Big Little Lies? Granted, there are significant differences。 But the overall vibes -multiple POV characters, someone's-murdered-but-we-don't-know-who, turns out this guy hurt several people over the years and they're all here at this party tonight and they all want to kill the asshole so it's actually a neat tidy good murder。The end felt very rushed and kind of hollow after all the mysterious build up。 And I won't say I wa Am I the only one who felt the last few twists of this strongly resembled Big Little Lies? Great book - lots of twists and turns。 I love how it is told from many different points of view。

Eh it was ok。 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you like fast paced, unpredictable thrillers。。。this is NOT for you。 It was a good book, but slow in the beginning and a bit predictable。 Not usually what I enjoy but I liked it。

Just get to it alreadyI can’t believe this book has received such hype。 I literally hated every character。 The book was way too dark for me and just dragged on。 I finally couldn’t take it anymore and read from the end back。 Although there were several twists in the end, the thought that one person just happened to be involved with every awful thing that befell each character。。。。so far fetched I was glad I skipped the last quarter of the book。

Sophie Hinchcliffe

Very average read! Felt like the wedding that never ends。 Took over 2/3 of the book for anything to really happen。 Predicable plot and am surprised it's a best seller。 Very average read! This book received a lot of hype and I thought it would be good。 It was "good" but just not enough character development I suppose。 I actually cannot pin point why I didn't like it that much, but it wasn't worth the hype。 This book received a lot of hype and I thought it would be good。 It was "good" but just not enough character development I suppose。 I actually cannot pin point why I didn't like it that much, but it wasn't worth the hype。 。。。more

It took my a while to get into the book。 But when I did, it was quite interesting。 I really liked the way the author used different point of views to explore the story。 Although a mystery muster it was written more like a drama and I found that very interesting。

Angie McCarthy

I cannot tell if reading this when there was a wind storm warning was the best idea or the absolute worst idea。 The twists and turns kept me up until 3 am!

It was a bit slow for me。 It took far too long for me to get fully into the story, and even then I only kept reading because I just wanted it all resolved。 And the resolution was a bit lackluster。 There were a few bits that were surprising, but the big ending was only okay。 This really does feel like a lot of the British thrillers I’ve read before。 It might just be the writing or the numerous references to British slang。 It’s just your typical unreliable, unlikable female narrator with a ton of It was a bit slow for me。 It took far too long for me to get fully into the story, and even then I only kept reading because I just wanted it all resolved。 And the resolution was a bit lackluster。 There were a few bits that were surprising, but the big ending was only okay。 This really does feel like a lot of the British thrillers I’ve read before。 It might just be the writing or the numerous references to British slang。 It’s just your typical unreliable, unlikable female narrator with a ton of problems。 But this threw in a few more perspectives which was different。 Overall, it was okay。 Enjoyable at the end, but not amazing or shocking。 CWs: self harm, death, blood, alcohol, abortion, revenge born, suicide 。。。more

It started slow and came together in the end real fast。 Quick read。 Author reveals character little by little to keep the suspense。

I'm not a fan of mysteries, but a good one will hold my interest。 This was not a good mystery。 Here's the Cliff notes so you don't waste your time。 It's a story about a group of totally unlikeable assholes who went to school together。 Then they reconnect years later at a wedding。 There's also a bunch of woman in attendance who were treated like shit by some assholes in their past。 The "cleverly" designed finale is horrible, yet the best part of the story。 Who in the hell would want to read this I'm not a fan of mysteries, but a good one will hold my interest。 This was not a good mystery。 Here's the Cliff notes so you don't waste your time。 It's a story about a group of totally unlikeable assholes who went to school together。 Then they reconnect years later at a wedding。 There's also a bunch of woman in attendance who were treated like shit by some assholes in their past。 The "cleverly" designed finale is horrible, yet the best part of the story。 Who in the hell would want to read this book? 。。。more

⭐️/5️⃣—> I rate this 1 out of 5 stars。Not even worth a full review。 Just know that this book was WAY overrated and overhyped。 All character development (or lack thereof) with no plot, once we finally got to the plot (the last 20 pages) it was pointless and too coincidental。 Needles to say, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME。 This book was painful to get through。

The strongest thing about this book is the atmosphere of the island itself。 You really get this sense of dread and this idea of being lured there and you can just feel something's going to go wrong。 I like that we get the story through everyone's different perspectives - it creates an interesting dilemma between their own perspective + the perspective of others about them, in a sense that you never fully know who to trust - which is fun。The conclusion plays a bit too heavily on coincidences for The strongest thing about this book is the atmosphere of the island itself。 You really get this sense of dread and this idea of being lured there and you can just feel something's going to go wrong。 I like that we get the story through everyone's different perspectives - it creates an interesting dilemma between their own perspective + the perspective of others about them, in a sense that you never fully know who to trust - which is fun。The conclusion plays a bit too heavily on coincidences for me so I think the build up was much more satisfying than the rest, but overall, the book is still pretty juicy。 。。。more

I liked this。 I would say, with one exception, most of the “twists” were visible a mile away, but it was still enjoyable and a FANTASTIC audio book (though I really wasn’t ready for audio book sex scenes)。

Really good book! The ONLY reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is because it took a couple chapters in for me to really get into the book。 Awesome ending though!!!
